Random Siena Photos, Part 1

Attending a partido di calcio (game of soccer) of Siena vs. Bologna.  Siena won 1-0.  It was unlike any sporting event I've ever attended!  Each of the spectator sections were broken up by double and triple barbed wire fences, and the sections were segregated from the field by several barriers, including a barbed wire-topped wall with notices posted on it about the jail time you would get if you ran onto the field.  There were no concessions stands or alcohol; you just sat and watched.  The fans were quite terrifying in their intensity.

Inside of Santa Maria della Scala is a church, called Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata.
View looking up Via del Citta, one of the main roads that circled the Piazza del Campo.  You can see on the right that extensive renovations were being conducted on the Loggia della Mercanzia during the entire 4 months that I was there, so I never got to see it.

Bruco (caterpillar) fountain.  It was right underneath the street as you turned around a hairpin bend.

Bruco Contrada Fountain

Location of Siena's Carroccio (carriage) that they would parade out for the Palio.  It was right next to my apartment.
View down Casato di Sotto (the street I lived on) towards the Campo

My courtyard viewed from my second floor bedroom window.  We didn't have any access to it (there was no ground floor door).   It appeared to be the courtyard for the official city tourism office.

View of the Campo from a portal off of Via del Citta.

Meeting place for the people of the Giraffa Contrada.

Lupa Contrada Fountain.  The water was off in this photo, but you can see where it would have cascaded down.  Unlike other Contrade, Lupa has its fountain, church, and stall for it's Palio horse all in close proximity together.
