Like many cities in Italy and Europe, Siena is surrounded by a vast wall. To this day, it remains mostly intact, although certain parts have been demolished to allow more traffic to enter and exit the city center. Back in the medieval era, the wall was an important part of the city's defense. The only way to get in and out of the city back then were eight "porte" or "gates"/"portals". They are called: Porta Romana, Porta Tufi, Porta S. Marco, Porta Laterina, Porta Fontebranda, Porta Camollia, Porta Ovile, and Porta Pispini. Nowadays, they are still used, some for pedestrian traffic only, and others for all sorts of vehicular traffic.
